Mood board evaluation

I have created this mood board give me ideas on what types of images and colours that will go on to my magazine. Mood boards are used to provide me with visual research and to give me design inspiration toward my magazine.
To research the theme of my mood board I used search engines to find images. I used Google and Bing, I chosen theses two because they are well know and provide me with a large selection of images. Keywords I used to search were “red” “black” “white” Powerful” “bright” “bold”. I got good quality pictures by selecting the images with large amount of pixels so I can have better picture quality.
I used the mood board to help me design a set; I selected and edited appropriate images so I can have an idea on what key factors that will be in my pictures. I also showed me on what colours and textures I could use in my magazine to make it look professional.

The publication that I have chosen is NME magazine. The genre of the magazine manly consists of rock based music and features other different types of music as well. NME is one of the most popular music magazine in the world, it is published internationally which shows it’s a very successful magazine.
The paper's first issue was published on 7 March 1952 after the Musical Express and Accordion Weekly was bought by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, and relaunched as the New Musical Express. It was initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint. On 14 November 1952, taking its cue from the U.S. magazine Billboard, it created the first UK Singles Chart. The first of these was, in contrast to more recent charts, a top twelve sourced by the magazine itself from sales in regional stores around the UK.
The focus of the magazine is to provide the latest news about the world of music. Also informs people about the latest music and upcoming bands. It also presents monthly charts to show the most popular songs at the moment
The majority of readers are male with 65%. 50% of the magazine is sold to 16-24 year old. Which shows it’s targeted to today youths.
NME is a very popular magazine; it distributes over a million magazines around the world which shows the reputation is very powerful.
Many different companies chose to put adverts into the magazine NME states that “Our readers are passionate about music and as a result of their close relationship with the site content they are far more responsive to advertising. Whether they are more positively disposed towards brands that they see as supporting their favourite site or accessing advertising that they see as particularly relevant to them and their lifestyles they are 33% more likely than average to have taken action as a result of seeing an advertisement on the magazine”
NME website is the most popular music site in the Europe. It has a wide range of features such as download links to its radio and video which can be shares and commented on. It has earned worldwide respect for its rock music news and features, which are updated around the clock. With 1.3 million unique users generating over 13 million page impressions nme.com is the U.K.'s premier music content website. It offers unparalleled access to an affluent young audience and a unique opportunity to communicate with them in an environment that they relate to and return to frequently - 63% visit the site weekly or more frequently.
NME magazine is distributed to 8,000 different stores in the United Kingdom. Then is sold to the public. Other forms of distribution are digital distribution, which is shown on different types of new media technology such as I phones Blackberry’s and social networking site. Web 2.0 is used to show the magazine is more modern.
NME website is a very organised and structured site which is easily accessible with a wide range of features. Such as downloads videos and images.

The denotations on this cover is a well-groomed female, wearing a dress covered with flowers, standing at an angle with flowers on her head On this cover, the connotations are  the artist is shown she is happy and joyful through the use of flowers, her wearing a dress and the background of pink which shows it’s feminine. Also, the use of flowers shows innocence. Her hair is neat this emphasises very professional.

The mise-en-scene, background is a soft pink colour. It is plain and taken in a studio which shows they wanted a perfect picture. The simple background causes the readers full focus and a simple thing to read. The artist’s body language is closed-up, which shows shyness but a little bit of her leg is showing as if she is teasing the reader. A part of the masthead is covered by the image this shows that Billboard is still confident that their readers will recognise their magazines name this shows it’s a well known.

The lighting is gentle and natural this shows the artist as soft and natural too. This type of lighting influences the rest of the image to be shown as happy and refreshing.
The artist on the cover is being represented as a delicate, slightly shy, pretty female. The stereotypical idea is that pink is a feminine colour and pink is used as the background colour here. Also, flowers are stereotypically feminine and
this artists dress in flowers as well as there being flowers on her.
The masthead on the magazine is bold and powerful. The black colour on a pink background makes it eye catching and manipulative. Other colours used are blue and yellow; the use of bright colours makes it a happy mood that is set which therefore makes it more attractive to read.

Layout is important for a magazine cover. The rule of thirds is applied on this cover, sub headings and other information is on the left hand side.
The target audience of this magazine is aimed at 13-25 year olds, who are most likely to recognize the artist bright colors and big bold writing shows it also targeting a feminine audience.
